Compton and John
Compton grew up in Charlottesville and attended Radford University. While at Radford Compton studied Interior Design, and when not in class she played field hockey for the Hustling Highlanders. After graduation Compton moved to Vail, CO to work in the valley as an Interior Designer. John hails from a small town outside of Louisville, KY. He attended Florida State University (Go Noles!) for two years before transferring to Samford University to complete his degree in finance. After graduating John moved to Vail, CO to be a ski bum. Hey, you're only 20 once! As fortune would have it, we met and married in Vail, and spent the next five years enjoying all the valley had to offer: skiing, biking, jeeping, hiking and getting lost (more than once – John's horrific map and compass skills were to blame).
In 1998 we realized a family was imminent, but with our families on the East coast we made the tough decision to sell our home, quit our jobs and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains. People often ask what it was like to move from Vail to Charlottesville and John's quick response is, "I moved from one beautiful set of mountains to another". As the Eddie From Ohio song – Old Dominion – says, "You think you'll find some mountains in western Colorado. Fifty weeks of snowy peaks is where you're gonna be. But babe the Rocky Mountains are gradually eroding. The hills of Coors are nothing more than Blue Ridge wannabes."
We started our family with the four-legged variety (two Weimaraners) before progressing to the ones that require diapers, talk back and consume large sums of money. After moving back to Charlottesville we lived in the Fry Springs area before buying Poplar's Edge from Compton's aunt (the original owner) in 2002. Since purchasing the property we have re-designed the interiors for more living space, cut down many trees for light, added gardens to extend the living space beyond physical walls and added plenty of deck space for those seeking refuge outside.
As a family we enjoy hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail, skiing at Snowshoe and Wintergreen, playing tennis and squash as well as swimming at the local Boar's Head Inn and working in our garden. Charlottesville and the surrounding Albemarle County are stunningly beautiful and we are happy to be raising our children in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. We love sharing our home and all that Charlottesville has to offer!
